A Containter Flower Planter Guideby James Huntley | Updated 11/08/19![]() Whether you have a large yard or have limited space such as a porch or balcony, container flower planters can add a welcome addition to your outdoor space. There are only a few guidelines you need to follow in order to have great looking container flower planters all summer long. Use a container that is large. This will allow the container to hold moisture longer and also provide plenty of room for the plants roots. If the plants have a healthy root system, they will produce healthier flowers. The container must have drainage holes in the bottom to allow excess water to escape. Use a good quality soil mix or potting soil for your container flower planters. Some of these mixes will contain a slow release fertilizer, if not you can always mix in some slow release fertilizer prior to planting the containers. Select your flowers and plants based on the light conditions where the planter will be placed. If you are placing the container in a sunny location, select sun loving plants or if you are placing the container in a shady location, select shade loving plants. Typically annuals are a good choice if you live in an area with freezing temperatures during the winter. If you have a short growing season, plant you flowers close together to give your container a full look sooner. You can extend your growing season slightly by covering your containers in the spring and fall as the nighttime temperature approaches the freezing mark.
With container landscaping, determine the color or mood you want each container to convey. Arrange the flowers you have selected together before planting to make sure you like the look and feel. Consider planting all one color such as all pink flowers or all white flowers for a monochrome look. Pastel flowers with their soft colors are most effective in gentle light or morning only sun. Bold, strong colors look best and will not wash out in bright sun. Use your imagination and pick colors for your containers that match the color on your house or group multi-color containers together for a bold statement. If you want to create a formal look to your containers, plant a single flower or several flowers of the same variety. For an informal container look, mix flower, colors and foliage types. How often you water will depend on how hot or cold it is, if it’s dry or rainy, if it is calm windy; and on the size of your plants compared to the container. You need to fertilize your flowers regularly during the summer to keep them blooming. Remove or deadhead the faded flowers promptly. Trim away discolored foliage or broken stems. Following these simple tips you will have success in container flower planters. Your flowers should thrive in their container, pot or planter and look great all summer long. Become a yard master! Depending on where in the country you live, you may have a couple of pests in the landscape that are doing severe damage to your yard and landscaping. I’m just going to come out and say it, and I know that it will make some of you cringe. I’m going to go over moles and voles. We are going to look at their differences and how you can and can’t control them. We will even touch on some positive things related to them, and I know, they do so much damage, how could there be any positive. What You Should Know About Moles
Once you have identified the affects the mole has had on your property, you can start to calculate what, when, and how to control the problem. The important thing to note here is: All moles are classified as wild, non-game animals under many state laws. (be sure to check your local laws). If these animals have no trapping or hunting season designated for them in your area, it is likely you will have to apply for a permit before killing a mole or vole. The main reason for this is, several of the species of moles are becoming low in population. The best way for a general homeowner to control them is by applying a deterrent product. There are several of these on the market, and you may need to try a couple before you find one what works well. The main problem with these is they deteriorate over time with the natural elements, so reapplication is a must. The other way to move them along is to try and prevent their food from being in your landscape. We can reduce their food supply by trying to control the insect/grub population. However their favorite food is earthworms, which are one of the best things you can have in your yard. Unfortunately the best soil in your landscape attracts moles. Controlling moles is definitely a give and take. I told you I would have some positive things to say, so here we go. Moles keep the population of insects/grubs down in our landscape, almost like spiders do with flying insects or snakes do with rodents. this is a positive, because it is a natural process and reduces the amount of chemicals put out every year for grub control. Moles also aerate the soil by digging and moving which helps oxygen, moisture, and nutrients move more freely in the soil. I know these seem very minor when you are standing in your yard looking at what seems to be a minefield from all the tunnels, but these few positives play a very important role in our landscape. What You Should Know About Voles
The damage from voles is not as noticeable as that of a mole until your plants root system is completely eaten. If you have ever experienced this, you know one day your plant looks fine, and the next it is laying on its side with absolutely no roots left on it. There’s also nothing worse than mowing your lawn, having it looking awesome only to come outside the next morning to huge piles of dirt created by voles. It is completely legal to kill voles (unlike moles). The problem with controlling them is they breed/populate very rapidly, so once you have a few, more are sure to come. There is no great way of controlling them, but the best methods are planting less desirable plants, so stay away from tuberous plants or plants with a fleshy root system. Another method is using deterrent product, but the same will apply as in mole control. These break down in a short amount of time with the natural elements so multiple applications are a must. One other method is to set out traps in areas where you know they are present, and check them daily. I know some of you out there have read this whole article hoping to find out the positives to voles. Well, I hate to disappoint, but there are no positive aspects that I can think of when it comes to Voles. I hope this has been helpful, and maybe give you even a little hope to a couple of pests that we deal with on a daily basis. from https://www.yardmasterz.com/yard-care/controlling-moles-voles/

This 22-inch diameter barbecue features a porcelain-enameled bowl, which lends well to the vintage look of this barbecue. You’ll have lots of room to cook up some burgers and steaks on the cooking grate that measures over 360 square inches.

3. Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Kettleman Charcoal Grill
Char-Broil has deemed this unit the ultimate backyard grilling machine. But does it stand up to that reputation? It offers a 360 square inch cooking surface – which seems to be pretty standard across the board when it comes to backyard grills that use charcoal. It looks great and has a sleek black design that would look good in any backyard or on any patio.
The domed hood is porcelain-coated to protect it from the elements, so you don’t need to worry about leaving this it outside for a few days at a time. It’s always best to have a cover, but this is a sturdy bbq that can handle some nights in the rain. The hinged lid makes it easy to check on your food as it’s cooking without feeling like you have to find somewhere to rest the cover, like some other models on the market.
It comes with a 10-year limited warranty and the vents on the lid help to keep the heat in and cold out. Char-Broil makes sure your meal turns out great each and every time you fire it up. It is extremely easy to move and is small enough to store in a garage or basement when not in use during the colder weather.
While this is a charcoal grill, Char-Broil has worked to improve the way it functions, and you’ll find you won’t need as much charcoal compared to other similar style barbecues. They use infrared technology to help the grates heat up faster and retain more heat so that you don’t have to keep worrying about the temperature inside the unit. It’s a very modern technology wrapped up in a vintage looking grill. As if this grill couldn’t get any better, it comes with 3 wheels that makes it easy to move it around from place to place. The So-So

4. Char-Griller Akorn Jr. Kamado Kooker Charcoal Grill
This impressive looking bbq from Char-Griller will remind you of a smoker with its unique shape and design. It features about 150 square inches of cooking surface, which is nearly half of the cooking surface of the other grills we’ve looked at; still though, it’s an excellent choice for taking trips to the park, going camping, or even using on your small apartment patio where traditional bbqs won’t fit.
The unique style of grill, known as a Kamado, is designed that way to promote even cooking and produce greater flavor in the food you want to enjoy. It’s easy to clean and easy to use, and the dual air-flow dampers mean you have greater control over your cooking process so you can get those steaks just right. The unique design also means you have to use less charcoal to get the same result you might get from a much larger and less portable unit.
The placement of the charcoal at the bottom of the unit means that there you will be able to do indirect-heat cooking, and if you use it correctly, you could smoke meats with ease. Of course, tending to the charcoal for hours could prove tedious, but if you were ambitious enough, it could be done. It does have recommended damper settings for smoking, but at very low temperatures. If you were going to attempt this, you’d want to be sure to read the instructions first.
The easy to grip handles that make moving it a breeze. Throw it in the back of your pickup truck and take it to the game on Sunday afternoon. The pebbled ceramic brings back lots of memories of cooking on older style bbq’s with grandparents at the lake. The bright red color, as well as the other colors that are available, lend well to the pebbled ceramic look and makes you feel like you are king of the charcoal. If you are looking for a smaller size charcoal bbq with smoking potential, this is the bbq for you.
The Good Stuff
- Great design
- Easy to use
- Portable and designed to be on the move
- Also great for backyard barbeques
- Dual damper settings for multiple cooking options
- Kamado style for unique cooking benefits
The So-So
- Read instructions carefully before attempting to smoke meats to ensure temperature is set properly
- Smaller size cooking surface than comparable bbq’s
- Ceramic will break if dropped
5. Dyna-Glo DGN576SNC-D Dual Zone Premium Charcoal Grill
This is the biggest bbq on our list of the best charcoal grills. It has over 800 square inches of cooking surface and can easily cook for up to 30 people at once! That’s a whole lot of meat and vegetables grilling on the barbeque!
This large grill is brought to you by Dyna-Glo, and they are known for their superior attention to detail and quality. The charcoal basket adjustment trays allow you to control the amount of heat and change up your cooking options so that you can bring more delicious meals to the table to share with family and friends.
The lid and body are made from stainless steel, and this looks like a more traditional grill that you would see in stores these days. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t provide robust cooking power like some of the vintage units on this list. No sir, this is an excellent option for anyone who loves charcoal cooking, especially for large crowds.
There is an adjustable smoke stack so you can take your charcoal grilling to the next level and smoke your own meat. There’s no reason to ever turn on your range or oven again. With the sizeable high-capacity ash catcher, you can remove any debris and old charcoal with ease. What’s better than a great performing grill? A great performing grill that is easy to clean.
Dyna-Glo has put out a great product here, but there are a few downfalls. The first is that it is quite large and weighs over 120 pounds. That means once you put it in your backyard or on your patio, it’s likely going to stay there for a long time. Every other unit we’ve looked at is portable – at least in theory – but this big guy is meant to stand the test of time in one place. Moving it requires two people. The other downfall of this one is that if you aren’t feeding 20 or 30 people on a regular basis, or smoking your own meats, this isn’t a good option for you. It’s a lot of time and energy wasted to cook up a couple of hamburgers on a Friday night for you and your family. Otherwise, this is a performance powerhouse bbq that deserves a second look for big crowds of people.
The Good Stuff
- Great for community groups or large gatherings
- Easy to use
- Modern design
- Lots of cooking space
- Easy to clean
The So-So
- Not suitable for single or smaller families
- Very heavy and hard to move
Charcoal Grill Buyers Guide
As you probably discovered after reading my best charcoal grill reviews, all grills are definitely not created equal. They all share some common elements and features, but when you’re ready to make an investment in a quality portable bbq that uses charcoal instead of propane, there are a few things you will want to look for and some things to avoid. Here is my condensed charcoal grill guide to help you get the perfect patio grill that you can enjoy for many years to come.
What will you be cooking & how much?
Before you purchase, make sure you get a charcoal bbq that can handle the food you will be grilling as well as the amount of food you will grill at any given time. If you plan on doing indirect cooking, make sure there’s enough room for the charcoal and some empty space to place your meats over. Also consider that you may be grilling vegetables and other items along with meat and fish. Get a grill with enough space for your needs.
Keep the correct temperature
Grilling at the correct temperature is a must. Make sure you get a grill that has vents in the bottom and the top so you can keep the temperature regulated. Kamodo grills will let you adjust the placement of the charcoal so you can keep it closer or farther from the food for better control.
Durability
The best charcoal grills will have solid internal and external construction that will last for years and years. Cheap grills won’t last, so spend a little more to get one with stainless steel and ceramic construction materials. You’ll have much better food and you won’t waste hundreds of dollars on a discounted grill that only lasts a couple of summers.
Keepin’ it clean
One of the main downsides to grilling with charcoal over natural gas is the dirty factor. Charcoal isn’t clean, but you want your grill to be, so make sure you buy a bbq that has a simple charcoal clean out area. This may be in the form of a removable charcoal tray or a bottom door that lets you remove ashes with ease.
